Scott’s Bar

DSC_0531Scott’s Bar is a place we’ve been visiting every once and again for a while now. They have a nice beer selection, it’s quite nearby for us, it’s often open when other places are closed already, and when it’s sunny, the terrace is great – if you’re not bothered too much by this typical example of Brussels facadism!
Not too long ago, they installed an open kitchen next to the entrance and expanded the menu, so it was about time for us to try some food there as well.

As it was a sunny day — spring in Brussels CAN be great sometimes — we found ourselves a seat outside. The food menu featured a whole list of warm sandwiches, a couple of Tex-Mex items like burritos, nachos and soft tacos, and an in Belgium quite unknown food item: sliders. In this case, the mini burgers don’t contain a slab of ground meat, but pulled pork, pulled chicken and pulled beef.

So we ordered the “Mixed trio of sliders”, a pulled pork burrito, and a side of oven baked potatoes with a Jack Daniels sauce. After a reasonable wait, during which I could actually see them prepare my sliders through the window, everything was delivered to our table, so we could dig in.

DSC_0539The contents of the sliders were very tasty and didn’t disappoint, but the buns themselves were a bit on the dry side. Sliced open too early on the day, or a day old, who can tell?

The burrito was nice — although no match for the burritos at CHEZWaWa — as were the huge chunks of oven baked potatoes. However, the best thing was the Jack Daniels sauce with those potatoes!

Before heading to Scott’s Bar, I quickly checked their Facebook page to see wether the kitchen would be open for our very late lunch (Mon-Sat 12h-22h, Sun 12h-19h), and I noticed some photos of trials of very tasty looking Jack Daniels ribs, and of beer marinated chicken. Sadly, there was no trace of them on the menu… Only when we went inside after our lunch, we noticed a blackboard with the specials “Drunk Chicken” and “Rack of Ribs”. Something to check first next time!

DSC_0527When it comes to drinks, Scott’s Bar seems to target a very mixed audience: the students nextdoor, the more discerning and adventurous beer lover, and everything in between! That means they have Guinness and all kinds of Alken-Maes beers on draught, and bottles of Corona and Heineken on the one hand, but beers by De la Senne, Brussels Beer Project and some other smaller breweries from all over Belgium and foreign craft beers on the other hand.
Actually, before the Brussels franchise of BrewDog opened, Scott’s Bars was the place where I went if I was in desperate need of my BrewDog fix!

There used to be a board with guest beers — both Belgian and foreign as well — but during our last visit, it was nowhere to be found. When we asked the waitress about any new guest beers, she told us there weren’t any. Let’s hope this only is a temporary issue!

We’ll return to Scott’s later, to find out what else you can do with bourbon in food, and hopefully find some new guest beers on the blackboard again!

  • 7 beers and a cider on draught, one of the beers changes every now and then
  • A selection of Belgian and foreign bottled beers
  • Guest beers, although they seem to be slacking off in this area lately…
