Panam Kebab

While the main dish available at Panam Kebabโ€”and the name tells you already what that isโ€”might give you the impression it is just a snack place, the added word ‘artisan’ makes it clear it is more than that. And as it turns out, they’re actually serving local craft beer with their craft kebabs!

The brewery of choice for Panam Kebab is Brussels Beer Project. While it’s not exceptional to find the token Delta in the fridge somewhere, Panam went all out, and stocked their coolers witha wide range of BBP beers. When we visited, the listed alcohol free beer was DrinkDrink‘s Trottinette, but it wouldn’t surprise us if some of BBP‘s newer low ABV beers have already found their way to the Place Fernand Cocq. All beers are in can or bottle, by the way, nothing on draught.

Classic Berliner

So, the food thenโ€ฆ Growing up in a coal mining region, is growing up with dรถner kebab. But that was a very specific kind of kebabโ€”the minced lamb or veal meat and fresh salad in a Turkish breadโ€”and only one of the two styles common in Berlin, where it originated from. The other kind is the Gemรผse Kebapโ€”literally vegetable kebabโ€”which is usually made with chicken and grilled vegetables. This last, typically Berliner style of kebab is the one Panam aspires to. There are also versions with halloumi or falafel available, and if you really want to forego the Turkish style bread baked especially for Panam, you can even choose to have it in a wrap, or even without any bread at allโ€ฆ

We of course had the Classic Berliner. And while it had been a while since we queued up for the famous Mustafa in Berlin for his Gemรผse Kebap, the Ixelles interpretation definitely reminded us of it!
