Le Coq is one of those bars you would easily walk by without giving it a second glance, and you would probably not even consider the possibility they could have some excellent beers in there. This probably explains the lack of tourists, which is quite nice, especially for a bar so close to the Bourse.
But they actually do have a proper, well balanced beer menu here, and even regularly propose a couple of new beers for their patrons to try!
Le Coq means “the cock”, and representations of this gallinaceous bird can be found all over the pub, in all shapes and sizes. The creature isn’t too obtrusive though, since I didn’t even notice any of them, until I had an extra good look for this blog post.
I wouldn’t have minded finding some poultry on the menu — spicy chicken wings anyone? — but the only things to satiate your appetite, are some cheese cubes, dry sausages, crisps, olives or a meatball.
Over to the beer then!
On the outside you can’t really overlook the Stella signage, and not surprisingly, once inside, you’ll see that four out of the five beer pumps are pouring bog standard InBev products… Luckily, the fifth pump is reserved for a beer of the month. This month for instance, the draught beer of the month is Lefebvre‘s Barbãr Blonde, last month it was the Birthday Session by De la Senne. This Brussels brewery is well represented on the bottle menu as well, by the way.
That bottle menu contains a special section for lambic beers, like the ones from Boon or Oud Beersel.
This special attention for beers of spontaneous fermentation is apparent by the choice of one of the beers of the month as well, which is a “Gueuze of the month”.
The other two beers completing Le Coq‘s quartet of beers of the month, don’t necessarily fit a specific style, but you can usually expect one dark beer — De Ranke‘s Noir de Dottignies this month — and one blond beer — Omer Vander Ghinste‘s OMER this month.
It is a reassuring thought however, there will regularly be something new to try at Le Coq, so don’t hesitate to drop by for a beer in an authentic Brussels setting!
