UPDATE: Closed permanently…
The Rue de Laeken doesn’t seem to be the best of places to open a bar for some: geek bar Schrödinger’s Cat didn’t last very long, and Tapas Soif? didn’t remain open for very long either. However, the latter has risen as a phoenix — apparently there even was some actual fire involved — with a little help from crowdfunders, and is now serving Belgian tapas and beers again under the name KICK tap’ASS. Time to go back to try the tapas we missed out on during its previous incarnation!
The photos on Facebook taught us they have put in a lot of work to get the bar back open again, but on first sight, not much seems to have changed: the beautiful wooden bar top is still in the same place, as is the open kitchen.
Even the beers on offer seem to be the same ones as before, although it is quite a nice selection of beers, all from smaller Belgian breweries like Silly, Oud Beersel and Dupont. The beer menu isn’t always clear though — Bersalis Kadet or Tripel? Is Kapittel “brune” the Dubbel or the Prior? — so you might want to ask to see the bottle to make sure which beer you’ll be drinking!
There are quite a few tapas to choose from, like vegetable ‘caviar’ with toasted bread, different kinds of cheese croquettes, the house specialty (Chimay cheese and onions, Orval cheese and bacon, or Herve cheese and ham), oven toasted slices of bread with all kinds of tasty toppings, like potatoes, bacon, Chimay cheese, onions and honey, or goat cheese and butternut, skewers with chicken and bacon, meatballs in ‘sauce lapin’, crispy chicken tenders…
For those wo have trouble choosing, luckily they have a tapas menu for €15 per person, giving you one of each section, so five different dishes. If you come back another time, you can ask to be served different tapas, so you can easily try them all! And we must say: after a menu like that, you’re quite filled up!
The atmosphere and decoration in KICK tap’ASS is quite informal, sometimes even feeling like a youth club, but that might in part be because of a birthday party being celebrated there during our visit. It does make us feel at home though!
Keep an eye on the menu when winter is coming: they might be adding some Eastern-European dishes to the menu!
