Houtsiplou

Burgers and beer are an excellent combination, we have mentioned that before. Not everybody likes burgers though, or at least not all the time. Luckily, at Houtsiplou the menu consist of more than just burgers, offering a range of classic Belgian dishes and some others as well. Your dining partner prefers beef carpaccio over beef burgers? No problem here!

If you do like burgers, you have twelve options to choose from at Houtsiplou: eight beef burgers, one chicken burger, one duck burger, one breaded fish burger and one halloumi burger. As seems to be customary in those gourmet burger places, if you don’t specify anything when ordering your beef burger, you’ll get it medium rare, bordering rare. Combined with a big slice of goat cheese — as is the case in the Seguin burger — and other cool elements like the salad and sauce, this results in the whole burger cooling down completely quite quickly. Maybe ordering my burger medium well — the way I prefer it anyway — would help keeping it hot longer?

The beer menu seems to have shrunk considerably since last time we were at Houtsiplou: just three basic beers on draught — the ‘special’ beer mentioned on the menu is just a Leffe blonde — and eleven bottled beers. Among those eleven, however, you’ll find a St. Bernardus Abt 12, Orval, Westmalle Tripel and Saison Dupont.

Not mentioned on the menu, but on one of the chalkboards against the wall, is the beer of the month. This month’s beer is Brussels Beer Project‘s Babylone, which was highly recommended by the nice lady serving us. It’s alway’s nice to see staff passionate about beer!

If you still have some room after the main dish, don’t hesitate to have a peek at the contents of the fridge next to the entrance: a nice selection of sweet pies and cakes awaits you!

Choice aplenty when it comes to burger places in Brussels — although it doesn’t quite yet match Glasgow yet in quality — but when there’s a dining companion not quite up for buns, you quickly run out of options. Houtsiplou caters for such a mixed crowd of eaters, while proposing a nice beer as well.
