Hoppy Loft

UPDATE: Is just a part of the Delirium bar now, and doesn’t serve anything special anymore…

2016-10-15-22-24-13xWe had selected the Hoppy Loft for a blog post before, but that night they only had almost nothing but Huyghe beers on draught, and once you’ve tried their Delirium beers, you’ve had their best already. So we quickly left again, to visit an other place to write about for that week.
Lesson learnt: don’t go to the Hoppy Loft, unless they’ve announced something interesting on their Facebook page.

Luckily, last week they posted something about some beers from La Débauche, a French brewer until that moment unknown to us. Knowing there would al least a couple of new beers to try, we headed back to the dreaded Delirium Village

dsc_0943xWe’re no fans of the huge, loud crowds of tourists flooding the narrow streets and bars in this part of Brussels, “Ilot Sacré”. It doesn’t really help of course, that Delirium Café — the first bar of this beer imperium — is in every tourist guide. Add to this the fact that the Hoppy Loft only opens at six o’clock in the evening, and you’ll realise that the crowds are unavoidable here.

Admittedly, the beer list at Delirium is huge, but if you’ve been around a bit, you’ll be hard-pressed to find anything still interesting. Don’t expect a lot of help or expertise from the staff either, the beer list will have to suffice.

The Hoppy Loft — basically just the upper floor of Delirium Café — is a bit different. The focus here is on twenty taps mounted over a narrow counter, so lines can be quite long. Like we experienced, on a bad day there might be nothing available what they aren’t serving already downstairs. On a good day, however, you might be in for a treat!

I wouldn’t really call it tap takeovers, but they usually seem to hook up four or five beers from the same brewery at the same time. So while it was the La Débauche announcement that grabbed our attention, they still had some beers from the English brewer Siren Craft and Dutch brewer Kaapse Brouwers available on draught as well.

One other plus: the Hoppy Loft is likely to be still open when most other downtown beer bars are already closed. So if you end up in Delirium Village, head up the stairs and check out the current offer!
