Het Goudblommeke in Papier

There’s quite a bit of history to Het Goudblommeke in Papier, even though it’s ‘only’ a little over 70 years old, and it’s not surprising a lot of effort went into reopening the bar after a bankruptcy a decade ago. But the protected building and bar rooms of this  ‘marigold in paper’ have more to offer than just memories of René Magritte and Guido Gezelle: artistic performances of all sorts, but of course good Belgian food and beer as well!

It’s only fitting for a place like Het Goudblommeke in Papier, that it serves a large selection of the Brussels beers par excellence: gueuze and kriek. Cantillon, of course, but Boon, Girardin and Oud Beersel as well. From that last one they’re usually serving fresh lambic as well, flat as it should be, and not from a bottle, but a mystery container they keep in the back somewhere… Especially in summer it can be a very refreshing start to an afternoon on their tiny terrace.

But not just these classics — and others, like a couple of trappists — are there to quench your thirst: one of the four taps pours Zinnebir, another is reserved for a guest beer that regularly changes. There usually are a couple of interesting guest bottles as well, so keep an eye out for the beers mentioned on the little blackboards scattered all over the place.

The food menu is decidedly Belgian — no Italian would call the spag bol served in Belgian bars Italian — or even Brussels: you’ll find all variations of stoemp, vol-au-vent, carbonnades “à la Bruxelloise”. If you just want a light lunch, try some slices of bread with pottekeis, bloempanch (black pudding) or tête pressée (brawn / potted heid).

So next time you’re heading for La Porte Noire, don’t let the museum-like — and protected — interior scare you away, and have a beer and a bite at Het Goudblommeke in Papier first. You’ll still have plenty of time for other bars when it closes at midnight!
