Bintje

It makes so much sense to have a beer with your chips, it is just crazy nobody thought to open a craft beer chip shop in Brussels before. Bintje stepped up to the plate, and opened their chip shop in the Chatelain area of Ixelles last December. Not only do they serve two draught beers — currently both from De la Senne — with their organic chips, there are dozens more of excellent bottled and canned beers — both Belgian and foreign — to choose from, certainly a lot more than any other bar in the neighbourhood, as far as we know!

The other Brusseleirs Cantillon, No Science, L’Annexe and Beerstorming, are available at Bintje as well, as are other Belgian favourites like 3 FonteinenAlvinneDe Dochter van de KorenaarDe RankeDolle BrouwersDupont, and Tilquin. From abroad you’ll be able to drink beers from well-known breweries like Jopen in the Netherlands,  and the American Stone in Germany, but also beers from breweries a bit harder to find here, like the English Wild Weather Ales, or the Polish AleBrowarTrzech Kumpli and Browar Pinta. There are so many beers, they don’t all fit in the fridge, but if you decide to have a beer from the uncooled shelf, they’ll happily put it in some ice-water while you wait for your food order. This proved to be a sufficiently effective way to cool our beers down to an enjoyable temperature.

All beers are also available for take-away, and the prices are discounted quite a bit if you take home over a certain number. Regulars will be able to get that discount for single bottles or cans as well, using some kind of savings card system.

However, the main product at Bintje — which actually is the name of a potato variety — is chips. The organic, unpeeled chips — even though they are fried in oil instead of fat — were delicious, but we would have loved to have some more… Since there’s only one size available — but a decent size, for just € 2,50 — you’ll just have to order another cone of chips if you’re really hungry.

In addition to the chips, there is also a number of what they call ‘snacks’ available, but what most other places would consider the main dish: cheeseburger, pulled pork, grilled chicken, roast beef, fried seitan, eggplant, or coalfish, served in either a bun, a tray, or with some vegetables. We can attest for the pulled pork and chicken: well executed!

Chips and proper beer is a winning combination, and we can only hope this becomes a trend, so we don’t have to take a metro and a tram to enjoy it!
